Two different mechanisms
PSS uses the contact between a stationary carbon face and a rotating stainless rotor. The rotor is sealed to the shaft by internal O-rings. Bellows compression maintains contact at the faces.
GLIDE describes its GMSS as a proprietary double lip seal with an integrated bearing surface inside a GLIDE-100 composite housing. It should be compared as a lip-seal system, not described as another carbon mechanical face seal.
What makes PSS worth considering
The PSS dynamic sealing interface is carried by the carbon and rotor faces. That arrangement appeals when you specifically want a mechanical face seal and a service plan centred on inspectable components and replaceable bellows.
There is also a choice of construction. Type A uses moulded nitrile bellows; PRO adds reinforced silicone bellows, a secondary shaft retention collar and upgraded clamps. The appropriate choice depends on the installation.
Where GLIDE has a different emphasis
GLIDE promotes a lightweight, non-corrosive housing and integrated bearing alignment. Its manufacturer lists use in inboard ski and wake boats and offers enquiries for custom sizes. Those are legitimate considerations when looking at an existing GMSS installation.
GLIDE also specifies use of the supplied installation tool for warranty coverage. A product decision should include the fitting method and the installer’s familiarity with the chosen system, as well as the seal itself.
Compare the whole refit
Ask for a comparison using your actual shaft diameter, stern-tube diameter, axial space and operating conditions. Include water connections, service access and the parts needed for the work. A seal that looks similar in a photograph may have a different installation envelope.
Avoid treating manufacturer material claims as a direct lifespan comparison. Without equivalent test conditions, they do not establish which product will last longer in your boat. Neither a brochure nor a parts listing can replace that installation assessment.
