A few good questions.
Straightforward answers about selecting, fitting and looking after a PSS shaft seal.
What information do I need for a quote?
Send the shaft diameter, stern-tube outside diameter and available space between the tube and coupling. Include original units, vessel details and clear photographs. An existing part number is helpful.
Are 25 mm and 1 inch the same shaft size?
No. One inch is 25.4 mm. Keep the shaft’s nominal unit and size when selecting a seal; do not round to a nearby option.
What is the difference between Type A and PRO?
Both use the PSS face-seal principle. PRO adds reinforced silicone bellows, a secondary shaft retention collar and 316 stainless clamps. Confirm the complete installation dimensions for the selected model.
Can I fit a PSS while the boat is afloat?
The PSS installation manual requires the boat to be out of the water. Plan installation or bellows renewal with the person carrying out the work.
Does every PSS need a pressurised water feed?
No. Qualifying low-speed installations may use a vent. Higher-speed vessels and certain shaft-log arrangements require positive feed. Use the current instructions for the actual installation.
How often should the bellows be replaced?
PSS recommends six years for Type A and eight to ten years for PRO and Type B. Inspect regularly and address damage or deterioration earlier.
Can the rotor set screws be reused?
PSS says not to reuse cup-point set screws after they have been tightened against the shaft. Use the correct replacement screws and the model-specific fitting procedure.
Is a little mist normal after installation?
PSS describes fine mist and carbon dust during initial bedding, averaging about one hour. Persistent mist or a new leak after normal service needs assessment.
Will a PSS solve a worn-shaft problem?
Its dynamic interface is at the carbon and rotor faces, which may help in some refits. Shaft condition still matters at the O-ring areas and throughout the installation. Have it assessed before selecting a replacement.
