Start with two exact diameters

Record the propeller-shaft diameter and the outside diameter of the stern tube where the bellows will attach. Keep the measured units. A nearby metric value is not an interchangeable imperial shaft size.

Use the size finder to shortlist published combinations. If the existing seal has a readable part number, include it with your enquiry, but check the actual installation as well.

Choose the product family

PSS Type A covers shafts from 3/4 to 3-3/4 inches and metric shafts from 20 to 95 mm. It pairs the carbon/stainless face-seal arrangement with a moulded nitrile bellows.

PRO covers the same overall shaft range and adds reinforced silicone bellows, a secondary shaft retention collar and upgraded hose clamps. Its construction makes it worth discussing for more demanding operating conditions.

For larger installations, Type B covers the manufacturer-listed range from 4 to 6-1/2 inches and 100 to 165 mm. This is a specification-led selection rather than a simple upgrade from a smaller seal.

Check the space around the shaft

Two products can fit the same shaft and stern tube yet need different installation space. Check the distance to the coupling, the surrounding radial clearance and the access needed to fit and inspect the unit.

Describe how you use the vessel

Tell Luxfords whether the boat is a yacht, displacement cruiser, planing powerboat or commercial vessel. Include operating speed, engine arrangement and any known bearing inside the shaft log. These details help determine the appropriate cooling or venting arrangement.

If you are replacing another seal, explain why. A routine renewal, limited access, damage and a change in operating conditions lead to different conversations.

Plan the quote around the job

Ask for the complete requirement: seal, relevant plumbing accessories, any additional retention component and service parts for the planned work. Confirm supply timing before committing to a haul-out date.
