A new seal and its initial run
PSS describes an initial bedding period of approximately one hour. Fine mist and some carbon dust can occur as the mating surfaces bed together. That guidance applies to initial operation; it does not explain every continuing leak.
Keep the installation date and initial running history available. Report a symptom that persists after commissioning, appears after a period of normal service or differs from what the installer told you to expect.
Dripping while stationary
The manufacturer identifies contamination between the faces as one possible explanation for a seal leaking at rest. The correct response depends on the condition of the installation and the nature of the leak.
Describe where the water appears. A face interface, a bellows connection and a hose fitting are different locations. A clear photograph can help explain this without dismantling the assembly.
Mist while underway
After the initial bedding period, PSS guidance points to compression as an item to check when mist occurs during operation. This is a check against the model-specific setup, not a reason to tighten components without a diagnosis.
Include the operating conditions and recent work in your report. Changes to the coupling, engine position, mounts or seal installation are useful context for the technician assessing the cause.
An unusual squeal
A high-pitched sound from the seal can indicate insufficient water at the faces. PSS instructs that the seal must not run dry. Stop the affected shaft operation when safe to do so and have the water arrangement and seal inspected before continuing.
Do not reach around rotating machinery to investigate. If the source is uncertain, say so. Identifying the actual component producing a sound is an important first step.
Give the technician a useful account
Write down the seal model, shaft size, approximate installation age and whether the issue happens at rest or underway. Add recent maintenance, photographs and any known change to the water supply.
Do not separate the sealing faces or dismantle a below-waterline assembly as a casual test. If water ingress is significant, manage the immediate situation using your vessel procedures and obtain local assistance.
